To improve service for customers within Miami County, DP&L has proposed constructing a new 17-mile, 138,000 volt transmission line from the existing West Milton substation to the existing Eldean substation in Concord Township, northwest of Troy.

Specifically, the proposed line will maintain adequate transmission system voltages in the northwest area of the DP&L transmission system under various outage conditions, complying with mandatory Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)/ North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) reliability standards.

Where will the new transmission line be located?

DP&L studied multiple options before deciding on the proposed routes, which minimize the impact to sensitive areas and land uses, and incorporated input gathered from public meetings held in 2014. An additional Public Open House is planned for November 7, 2018 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Crystal Room, 845 W. Market Street in Troy

As required, DP&L will file an application for the project with the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB), which is responsible for hearing public comments and determining whether to approve the project and the route.

What if the transmission line affects my property?

Once the route has been approved by OPSB, a DP&L representative will contact affected property owners to explain specifics about where the line will run and to request an easement.

For affected property owners:

  • Compensation for the easement will be based on market value.
  • In most cases, the landowner will be able to continue to use the property beneath the line.
  • DP&L will seek the right to trim trees and other vegetation beneath and surrounding the line.
  • Trees will be removed from the easement area, but DP&L will work with landowners to restore property and landscaping to original condition.
  • Compensation will be made for loss of crops.

Will electric service be interrupted?

During construction of the line, customers should not notice interruption of their electric service. If an outage is required for a short period, the affected customer(s) will be notified before the outage to limit the inconvenience.
